What is the Board of Trustees?
The Board of Trustees is the official governing body of the school and is made up of five volunteers. The Board of Trustees is responsible for creating school policy and ensuring that a quality education is delivered in alignment with the school’s charter. The board welcomes all to its public monthly meetings, the minutes of which, once approved are available in the school office and below on this web page.

When are the meetings for the Board of Trustees?
Board Meetings are generally held on the second Monday of each month at 4:00 p.m. They are advertised in accordance with New Jersey law.

What are the functions of the Board of Trustees?
The functions of a Board of Trustees, as outlined by the NJ School Boards Association, are to:

  • Develop a budget
  • Provide guidance through policy
    • The board sets policy or the WHAT (vision, goals, needs, and expectations)
    • The principal provides the HOW (hiring, evaluating, purchasing, assigning, implementing, coaching, teaching, testing, assessing)
  • To provide management oversight (hiring and evaluating the administrative principal, approving the curriculum, etc.)
  • To ensure two-way communication with administration, staff, parents, and within the Board.

Who are the Charter School’s Board of Trustees?

Dr. Edwin Selby - Board President (2013-2016)
Dr. Selby is a Senior Associate for the Center for Creative Learning, LLC, an Adjunct Professor in the Graduate School of Education, Fordham University and a self-employed educational consultant. Affiliations: Member – Sussex County Teen Arts Festival Board of Directors (serving as President for 15 years) and the Chairman, Sussex County Democratic Committee. He was also the Democratic candidate for the 24th district State Senator seat in 2011.

Mr. Charles Teufert - Vice President (2014-2016)
Mr. Teufert is a local businessman and a former Charter School parent. He has served in a variety of capacities in his township – Township Commissioner, Deputy Mayor, Land Use Board, Recreation Committee, Plan Endorsement Committee to name a few. He has also served on the Montague Board of Education.

Mr. Jason Apter - Board Member
Mr. Apter is the president of J.L.Apter Memorial Chapels, a 4th generation funeral firm, in Sussex, Morris and Essex Counties. In addition, he holds a position as V.P. of Investments at Wunderlich/Dominick and Dominick in NYC and is a retired MICU Paramedic. Mr. Apter is a current Charter parent and also serves on the Foundation Board of Newton Medical Center. He is a graduate of Seton Hall University and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of N.J.

Mr. Michael Nelms (2012-2018)
Mr. Nelms is a local Real Estate Attorney. He is a member of the Board of Hampton Township Rotary and a member of the Project Self-Sufficiency Legal Referral Board. He has also had a student attend the Charter School.

Dr. Mary Rapuano (2014-2016)
Dr. Mary Rapuano is a former Charter School parent and a teacher at the Sussex County Technical School. She is on the board of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), and the Sussex County Arts & Heritage Council. She has lived in Sussex County for 22 years.

Mrs. Stephanie DePinto (2017)
Mrs. DePinto is a former Charter School parent, as well as the past PTO President and Fundraising Co-Chair. She is a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and has served on the Ogdensburg First Aid Squad since 1999. Currently holding the position of Trustee, she previously held the role of President and Vice President of this non-profit organization. Mrs. DePinto earned her bachelor's degree in Business at Centenary University.

Michelle Syre
Michelle is a Network Marketing Professional and owner of a Relationship Marketing company. She lives locally in Sussex County and is a member of the Sussex County Chamber of Commerce. Some of their family charities include the Sussex County Sheriff’s Crime Stoppers and Ducks Unlimited. She has two children, one current charter student and one Charter graduate. She has a BS in Chemistry/Business from the University of Scranton and an MBA from Fairleigh Dickinson University. he has held positions in corporate, small business, non-profit and family-owned companies.
